Chiropractic and Heart Health

Chiropractic is a safe and effective way of maintaining a healthy heart. Clinical studies have found a positive correlation between chiropractic treatment and improved cardiovascular health. Chiropractic care contributes to heart health in many ways.

Posture:

Poor posture puts pressure on the rib cage and in turn the heart. The heart is essentially a pump moving blood through our bodies. Compression on this pump makes the heart work harder. Chiropractic helps maintain correct posture and reduces the mechanical load on the heart.

Neurological Supply:

The autonomic nervous system controls heart rate. Electrical impulses from the nervous system help control and regulate the heart. When spinal subluxations exist, neurological supply is altered. Chiropractic adjustments restore the natural state of the nervous system allowing the body to function optimally and in the case of the heart, maintaining a healthy heart rate.

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics in 2006 revealed that heart rate variability was changed in patients that received chiropractic care, effectively reducing heart rate variability.

Reduction of Stress:

Many clinical studies have proven that stress is an underlying cause of many health problems, particularly heart disease. Chiropractic adjustments release endorphins and enkephalins in the body, which are the “feel good” chemicals that reduce the stress reaction in the body. Adjustments help regulate the autonomic nervous system which is the controller of the fight or flight stress reflex.
